Benedictine Sisters of St. Lioba in India

On the 28th of February 1992 the Federation Chapter of the founding priory St. Lioba in Freiburg decided to change the status of the Community in India and established a new independent priory of Episcopal right with its Mother house in Bhopal.  It was assigned to the Archbishop of Bhopal. Thereby the former Indian Region has separated out of the Priory of Freiburg.

With the consent and blessings of Most Rev. Dr. Oskar Saier Archbishop of Freiburg, Germany and the decree of the establishment, which is issued on 28th February 1992 by the Mother Prioress Sr. Eoliba Greinemann of the founding priory, Most Rev. Dr Late Eugene D’Souza, Archbishop of Bhopal accepted and confirmed the new Benedictine Priory Ashirbhavan which belongs to the federation of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Lioba Germany, in the Archdiocese of Bhopal.

28th Sept. 1992 was a Red letter day in the History of Lioba family in India. During the Solemn Eucharistic celebration in the presence of Rt. Rev. Dr. Eugine D’Souza Archbishop of Bhopal, Priests, Religious and faithful, Mother Eoliba Geineman Prioress of the Founding Priory – Germany, read out the official Erection document and handed over to Sr. Benita Vadakkepurackal, the Regional superior and Ashirbhavan became an Independent Priory.  Sr. Redempta Mundackal was elected as the First Prioress of the new born Priory.
